Master Terry Shaw 6th Dan A TSDMAS Member In Motion

In 1970 at the age of 10 I started Judo at the “Y”. It wasn’t until I was 12 that I started training under Master Chang Young Chae in the old style Tae Kwon Do. In 1978 at the age of 18 yrs. I received my 1st Dan. A year later Master Chang moved back to Korea.
Around the same time I found myself training and teaching Goju Ryu at Sensei Ken Tallacks club and training in Toronto under Sensei Cezar Borkowski in Shotokan.
About four years pass before I joined a Ryukyu Kempo seminar in London, Ontario run by Master Oyata. Being intrigued with the Okinawan style Master Oyata, introduced me to Sensei Peter Carbon, one of his students from Detroit. In training under Sensei Carbon, Master Oyata invited me to start training directly under him in Kansas. Chosen to be the Canadian Representative out of Master Oyata’s Organization was an honour, but receiving my 2nd dan in Ryukyu Kempo under his tutelage was very humbling.
Wanting to learn more about the Okinawan art I decided to seek out another of Shigeru Nakamura Sensei’s students Master Odo. Finding the organization in Detroit I once again started as a white belt under the gentle guidance of Master Odo. Obtaining my shodan rank in again another style I came to the conclusion that all karate do (Tang Soo Do) are one and the same.
With being in a couple political organizations, I decided to turn to an internal martial art. I started my training under Master Ky-Ngo of Wu Tai Chi Chuan. Studying this for 5 years, Master Ky-Ngo introduced me to Grand Master Yang of the Yang Tai Chi Chuan style. He also introduced me to Master Grant. Although I was only with Master Grant for a year the training was very intense and hard three to four days a week. The type of training I will never forget. He taught me Chen Tai Chi Chuan and Shaolin Kung Fu. I then started training with Master Wilson Lee, one of Grand Master Yang’s original students. I trained with him in Toronto, and still occasionally see him.
My heart longed for karate, so over a period of years I attended many different seminars, with a lot of unforgettable people. Still wanting a home I started my search again under my original roots and it has brought me to the door steps of Grand Master Zacker’s Michigan Tang Soo Do Martial Arts Society, and here I’ll stay.
